“How to prepare after getting an invitation to apply for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship 2022?”
Many Canadian immigrants wish to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence after they have received permanent residence or Canadian citizenship themselves. Such individuals apply for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship under the Family Sponsorship program.
Recently, IRCC issued 23,100 invitations with the intention of accepting up to 15,000 complete applications from the pool of candidates who submitted the interest to sponsor form during the intake period in 2020.
In this guide, we will discuss the requirements to help you and your parents or grandparents prepare your applications for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship 2022.
Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship 2022
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a program to allow Canadian permanent residents and citizens of Canada to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency back in 2019. To apply for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship 2022, you and your parents or grandparents will need to meet the specific requirements outlined below.
Preparation on Sponsor Side
As a person sponsoring your parents or grandparents for Canadian permanent residence under PGP sponsorship 2022, you are required to meet each of the following requirements:
Demonstrating you are a Canadian Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen
Be at least 18 years old
Are currently residing in Canada
Have accurately calculated your family size
Meet IRCC’s minimum income requirement for your family size
Be willing and able to support your parents or grandparents financially for 20 years
Have filled out the sponsor interest form on IRCC’s website between 12 PM ET on October 13, 2020, and 12 PM ET on November 3, 2020.
How to Demonstrate You Are a Canadian Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen?
You can demonstrate you are a Canadian permanent resident or Canadian citizen by submitting any of the following documents:
A copy of your Permanent Resident card
Your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) if you haven’t received your Permanent Resident card yet
A copy of your Canadian Citizenship certificate
Your Confirmation of Permanent Residence document (IMM 5688 or IMM 5292)
Your Canadian birth certificate
A copy of your Canadian passport’s second page displaying your personal information
Your certificate of Indian status (if applicable)
How to Calculate Family Size for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship?
Sponsors will need to determine the size of their family, including all those for whom they will be financially responsible as sponsors, to confirm that they meet the income requirements. The process of calculating your family size is summarized below:
Step 1: Determine how many people are in your immediate family. This includes:
Your Dependent Children
So if you have a spouse and two children, your immediate family size will be four.
Step 2: Add any person or persons you have sponsored for permanent residence in the past.
Step 3: After that, you add:
Your parent(s) or grandparent(s) you want to sponsor
Their dependent children
So if your family consists of a Husband (You), Wife, 2 Children, 2 Grandparents, and 1 Dependent Sibling, your total family size will be 7 members.
Income Requirements for Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship 2022
As a sponsor, you will need to meet the minimum income requirement for sponsoring parents in 2022. This income amount varies based on your family size, so you should check the family size you calculated above with the corresponding minimum income amount on our website page.
Minimum Income for Each Tax Year
Income for each additional member after 7
Preparation on the Parents’ and Grandparents’ Side
Your parents or grandparents must meet various requirements to be eligible to apply under the Parents and Grandparents PR Canada program. This includes submitting:
National Identity Card
Police Clearance Certificate
If one of your parents passed away, the Death certificate of the late parent
You must also ensure your parents or grandparents do not face any type of inadmissibility issues under IRCC rules. Some reasons for inadmissibility include:
Understand the PGP 2022 Undertaking
As a Canadian sponsor, you will be required to sign an undertaking that declares you will financially support the parent or grandparent you have sponsored for 20 years. This undertaking starts as soon as the sponsored parents or grandparents land in Canada as permanent residents.
These sponsored parents or grandparents cannot use social assistance within the first 20 years. If they do so, they will be required to pay back the full amount. If your parents have dependent family members, this 20 years of undertaking extends to them too.
Note that the undertaking length is only 10 years for sponsors residing in Quebec.
