The Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is set to resume the citizenship tests online after eight months. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tests were put on hold to ensure proper identification of candidates undergoing the test.
On 26th November 2020, the IRCC launched an online platform for citizenship tests. IRCC first offered it to a small group of around 5000 individuals whose appointment was fixed before the Covid-19 pandemic. IRCC will test the online platform for citizenship tests for the next couple of months and invite more individuals to use it. IRCC will do it at the start of 2021 once the online platforms’ performance proves to be reliable.
Before the pandemic, the individuals who had applied for Canada immigration were stuck as the immigration pathway to gain Canada PR was blocked. IRCC says it will slowly and steadily resume all the Canada immigration services, which were shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before starting the citizenship test, candidates will be approached to confirm their identity by sharing personal details. They should snap a picture of themselves and their ID record with a webcam before the test starts.
The system will take photographs of candidates during the test — a cycle that has been utilized to guarantee the trustworthiness of different tests that moved online because of the pandemic, for example, law or graduate school admission tests.
The citizenship candidates will have to give the test in 21 days according to their convenience.
Is the online test format the same as the in-person test? Yes! Candidates have to answer 20 questions in 30 minutes. As per the IRCC’s guidelines, candidates need not call the department to be informed via email by their representatives.

Once the sponsors are selected, they will receive an invitation to submit the online application. The potential sponsors selected will have sixty days to submit the online application.
IRCC will provide accommodation to individuals with disabilities who cannot use the online portal. These individuals can submit a request to sponsor using an alternative medium, a paper copy, a large print or Braille. To make this available, these individuals have to contact IRCC’s customer support until 3rd November 2020.
IRCC understands that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals are impacted financially, and hence it is introducing a temporary public policy. This policy will reduce the wages for the 2020 tax year to the minimum necessary salaries, instead of the minimum essential wages plus 30 percent.
The Canadian Government understands that families must stay together in this situation of COVID crises. The 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program’s launching expands the Government’s initiative of prioritizing the approval of 49,000 family sponsorship applications by 31st December 2020, just as a declaration of a process to reunite more families and favour merciful cases inside the current border limitations.
A maximum 10,000 PGP application will be accepted as a part of the 2020 Parents and Grandparents program. The doors to the new intake for parents and grandparents (PGP) program will be opened in 2021 by IRCC, wherein a maximum of 30,000 new applications will be accepted.
The Government of Canada believes that it is crucial to reunite families and keep them together in these difficult times. The Parents and Grandparents program will be an exceptional pathway to reunite the families of the individuals with Canada PR and Canada’s citizens. The PGP program encourages families settled in Canada to apply for the program and call their parents and grandparents to stay with them. The PGP program process is a critical component of the Canadian immigration system. PGP program invites, retains and integrates the individuals having Canada PR and their parents and grandparents. The same is the case with the individuals having Canadian citizenship.
