Canada’s Latest Express Entry Draw Round  #229 was held today August 17, 2022. In this all-program draw, a total of 2,250 candidates got invitations to apply for permanent residence. IRCC has maintained the trend followed in the last three draws and invited 250 additional applicants. The cut-off score for the latest all-program Express Entry draw was 525, 8 points lesser than the previous draw.

The Latest Express Entry Draw Results August 17, 2022:

  • Express Entry Round: #229
  • Draw date: August 17, 2022
  • CRS score cut-off:  525
  • No. of candidates invited:  2,250
  • Tie-breaking rule: December 28, 2021

Why cut-off score is still so high?

The answer to that question is the long pause on draws. The last CEC Draw was 10 months ago and the last FSW Draw was 18 months ago. Since there were no draws the pool got bigger and bigger and now it is taking time to drop down the CRS score to the pre-Covid ranges.

For Canadian Express Entry, the most recent CRS cut-off scores are very high. The last draw was held on August 3, 2022, disappointed many widely expected applicants with a high cut-off score of 533. Even so, the cut-off score only dropped by 8 points in today’s Express Entry Draw on August 17, 2022.

This makes getting an ITA for candidates with CRS scores below 500 much more difficult. The candidates with a CRS of less than 470 have to wait for several months to obtain an invitation to apply.

With the influx of additional applicants, the Express Entry pool is growing in size as well. Thus, the CRS scores are not significantly impacted by the most recent Express Entry draws with low ITAs. In order to decrease the CRS Cut-off score in the upcoming draws, Canada will need to send out more than 2000 invitations. If subsequent draws follow the current pattern of invites (+250) and cut-off (-9), it will resemble this:

Upcoming Changes to Express Entry System in 2023

Express Entry targets talented professionals who can fill in the shortages in Canada’s labour force by meeting market demands, especially immigrants who speak French outside of Quebec. Through Express Entry, Canada expects to accept 55,900 permanent residents in 2022; by the end of 2024, that number will have skyrocketed to 111,500.

Since the candidates have already met a minimum standard of eligibility based on their CRS score, IRCC can process applications more quickly by inviting individuals through Express Entry. The IRCC hopes to handle new applications within six months now that draws have resumed.

However, rather than depending exclusively on a CRS score in the future, IRCC is currently thinking about organizing Express Entry draws that focus on particular skills and occupations. In June, Sean Fraser, Canada’s minister of immigration, told CIC News that by doing this, Canada would be able to choose more immigrants who are already well-suited for success in the job market.
