Prospective farmers must first check if they meet the minimum requirements for the Farmer Owner/Operator Category or the Young Farmer Stream by reviewing the eligibility information mentioned above.

They must also be prepared to pay the $2,500 CAD non-refundable processing fee and the $75,000 CAD refundable Good Faith Deposit.

Farmers must also make an exploratory visit to Saskatchewan lasting a minimum of 5 business days. During this visit, they must meet with service professionals and compile their findings in an Exploratory Visit Report.

They will need to submit this report with their application in the later steps. Applicants must complete their exploratory visit within the year preceding their application.

Farmers must begin gathering the documents required for their SINP Farm Category Application. They must also translate these documents if they are in languages other than English or French.

Any person can complete this translation, with the exception of the applicant’s spouse, family member, or the third party the applicant used to prepare their application.

The farmer must also include their common-law partner or spouse and dependent children on their application. Once the application is complete, farmers can submit it to the SINP office in Saskatoon by courier or in person.

• The SINP will screen the application for completeness and send farmers a unique SINP file number and instructions to submit their documents for third-party verification. They will then have one year to send the third-party verification provider’s assessment back to the SINP.
• The SINP will then send the farmer instructions on making their $2,500 CAD processing fee payment. The SINP will start the application assessment process once the farmer completes their fee payment.
• Farmer applicants may be contacted and asked to provide additional documents during this period. The SINP may also ask farmers to attend an in-person interview.
• Successful farmers will receive a Nomination Approval document, a Request for Deposit letter, and their Business Performance Agreement.
• The Request for Deposit letter will contain instructions on how the farmer can make their $75,000 CAD refundable Good Faith Deposit.
• They are required to complete this deposit within three months of receiving the letter.

Farmers will be nominated once they have completed their deposit and have returned a signed copy of the Business Performance Agreement to the SINP. The SINP will then send farmers a Confirmation of Nomination letter along with instructions to apply for permanent residence via Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Canada (IRCC).

Farmers will need to apply for permanent residence as soon as possible because the Nomination Certificate SINP sends IRCC is valid for six months.

Once the applicant has submitted their permanent residence application, IRCC will ask them to complete health and security checks. In some cases, farmers could be asked to attend an in-person interview.

The farmer must also attend a special “Landing Interview” after entering Saskatchewan. They must then operate their farm and meet the goals specified in the Business Performance Agreement. They can then apply to have their Good Faith Deposit returned.
